    Come join our team.  The ICA Store is hiring two part time Retail Sales Associate (RSA).  Each position offers two shifts totaling 15 hours per week as follows:

    • Position A:  Thursdays and Saturdays, 9:30 am – 5:30 pm
    • Position B:  Fridays 1:30 pm – 9:30 pm and Sundays 9:30 am – 5:30 pm

    Overview: We are looking for dynamic, well spoken, customer service oriented individuals who are interested in contemporary art & design.

    WORKING AT THE ICA

    1. All ICA employees are required to reside in Massachusetts and within a reasonable commuting distance from our Seaport location as of their first day of work.

    Responsibilities:

    • Operating the POS system and performing sales to the store’s customers.
    • Providing a high level of customer service to store visitors.
    • Maintaining the store appearance on a daily basis with cleaning, merchandising, etc.
    • Reconciling the cash drawer at the end of the day.  Performing closing reports. 
    • Restocking merchandise.
    • Keeping current on all merchandise & store trends.
    • Maintaining a presentable appearance and following the dress code provided by store management. 
    • Keeping informed about the museum’s exhibitions, and many programs. 
    • Aiding in the organization of the stock room. 
    • Opening and/or closing the store.
    • Ability and willingness to sell memberships when appropriate.
    • Weekend hours are mandatory, as well as some additional evenings and holidays.

    Qualifications:

    • High School Diploma

    Position Title: Visitor Assistant (VA)

    Overview:  The ICA Visitor Assistants are reliable, strong customer service oriented individuals who combine the responsibilities of gallery safeguarding with museum information and exhibition interpretation.     Responsibilities:

    • Serve as a liaison to visitors while promoting safety of the museum, communicate clearly and consistently with visitors to ensure a positive museum experience while facilitating safe and engaging interactions with artwork.
    • Remain informed and up-to-date of artwork on view, enhance visitor experience through interpretation and engaging inquiry based conversation.
    • Monitor visitors in gallery areas to provide smooth flow of visitation, prioritize artwork and visitor safety during regular museum hours, onsite programs, and special events.
    • Enforce museum guidelines in a clear and friendly manner.
    • Work in conjunction with gallery supervisors and security to respond to emergency situations.
    • Assist with use of educational resources and spaces, and promote programs when applicable.
    • Assist in maintaining inventory of brochures, literature, and gallery resources for the public.
    • Engage with visitors to answer questions and resolve concerns, partner with gallery supervisors to share feedback and resolve visitor experience concerns.
    • Report artwork incidents to gallery supervisors.
    • Contribute to regular educational gallery programming, such as Pop-Up Talks and weekend family book readings.
    • Attend staff exhibition trainings, museum-wide trainings, all staff and education department meetings as able.

    Qualifications:

    • Six months or more customer service experience required, preferably in retail, hospitality, or cultural organizations.
    • Ability to work under pressure in a fast-paced and diverse environment.
    • Experience with contemporary art, public speaking, and museum education a plus.
    • Experience with safety protocols is a plus.
    • Ability to be assertive if needed to enforce museum guidelines.
    • Solid interpersonal, problem solving and communication skills.

    Position Title: Teen New Media Program Assistant (TNMPA)

    Department: Education/Teen Programs

    Reports to: Teen New Media Program Manager

    Position Status: Full time, Hourly Non- Exempt, At Will

    Overview:  The Teen New Media Program Assistant (TNMPA) supports the ICA’s efforts to connect Boston-area youth with contemporary art by providing opportunities to engage with new media, including digital filmmaking, digital photography, and music production. The TNMPA will assist with the planning, development, and facilitation of Teen New Media programs. The TNMPA will also support the Teen Programs by maintaining files, providing data entry and tracking, processing program registrations, and coordinating with teachers in Boston Public Schools and other entities to help ensure a successful program. This is a full-time, hourly position. Because the TNMPA supports out-of-school time programs, some weekend and evening hours are required.

    Responsibilities:

    • Collaborate with Teaching Artists and Teen New Media Program Manager on planning, development, and facilitation of Teen New Media programs. Support with development and implementation of program objectives and curricula
    • Support teaching artists with incorporating ICA exhibitions and performances, as well as other contemporary art and artists, and ensuring that teens are engaging with and discussing contemporary art in relation to their own projects
    • Assist with the planning and execution of teen events, including showcases, screenings, exhibitions, teen nights, and other presentations.
    • Assist with the coordination of various ICA Alumni events and maintainalumni contact information
    • Assist Teen New Media Program Manager with maintaining the digital studio, equipment, and supplies; oversee equipment loans to participants.
    • Support the recruitment efforts for teen programs. Coordinate presence in and at schools, partner organizations, and community events. Plan and implement recruitment workshops. Create content for promotional purposes
    • Assume responsibility for data entry for Teen New Media programs, including participant onboarding documentation, intake and participation records, consent forms, and emergency contact information
    • Communicate with registered participants following program sessions and program completion as necessary
    • Maintain accurate program data records for institutional and partner needs. Support with program evaluation and production of reports.
    • Support with updates to Teen Programs website for programs and events
    • Assist with archiving of participants’ physical and digital works and program records
    • Under the supervision of the Teen New Media Program Manager, administer ICA involvement with the BPS Arts Expansion High School Credit Bearing Program. Attend program meetings, serve as primary liaison and maintain ongoing communication with teachers of record and program administrators, and coordinate teen attendance and grading records.
    • Administer ICA involvement with the Boston After School and Beyond Measurement Partnership
    • Represent the ICA and its Teen New Media program at city-wide meetings, conferences, and other professional opportunities
    • Maintain active and current knowledge in the fields of Museum Education, New Media Education, and youth audiences
    • TNMPA provides additional basic administrative support, as needed.

    Qualifications:

    • BA or BFA required in media arts, art education or a related field, or equivalent experience required.
    • Broad understanding and willingness to learn creative digital media and technology tools.
    • Experience working Windows and Apple computers; familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite required
    • Minimum of 1 year experience working in an administrative role
    • Previous experience working with teens
    • A demonstrated interest in contemporary art
    • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills both oral and written
    • Possess the ability to communicate with a diverse populations and present in a large group setting
    • Must be able to work independently, demonstrating initiative and proficiency at problem solving
    • Meticulous attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple projects at once
    • Ability to pass a CORI screening is required for this position

    Position Title: Gallery Teacher for K-12 Groups – Contract position

    The Institute of Contemporary Art/Boston strives to share the pleasures of reflection, inspiration, provocation, and imagination that contemporary art offers through public access to art, artists, and the creative process.

    The Education Department seeks applicants for Gallery Teachers for K-12 Groups to lead guided visits for school-aged groups during the school year.

    Overview: During guided visits, K-12 groups explore how contemporary artists question and make sense of the world. Through thoughtfully crafted gallery lessons that offer opportunities for reflection, close looking, and critical thinking, K-12 guided visits nurture student agency, honor student curiosity, and embrace the diversity of thought and experience that students bring to the ICA. The contract Gallery Teachers for K-12 Groups lead guided visits for school-aged groups during the 2025-2026 school year. Gallery Teachers collaborate with Education staff to develop and teach thematic, multimodal gallery lessons based on ICA exhibitions that incorporate guided discussion and activities.

    The Gallery Teacher for K-12 Groups position requires onsite presence.

    Scope of Work:

    • Work with ICA Education staff and the Gallery Teacher team to plan and implement guided visits for K-12 groups, with an emphasis on grades 8-12.
    • Develop gallery lessons.
    • Lead guided visits for K-12 groups on site at the ICA and ICA Watershed.
    • Attend virtual and in-person planning and debrief meetings with ICA Education staff and the Gallery Teacher team.
    • Participate in post-visit debriefs and assessment.

    Qualifications:

    • Background or experience in studio art, art education, art history, or museum education.
    • K-12 teaching experience in a classroom, museum, or community program setting. Experience with gallery teaching or lesson plan development, a plus.
    • Demonstrated commitment to creating supportive learning environments focused on valuing students’ backgrounds and experiences. Practice in culturally responsive, inclusive, equitable and anti-bias teaching practices a plus.
    • Ability to adjust communication styles to accommodate audiences of diverse backgrounds, ages, and abilities.
    • Ability to work collaboratively, meet deadlines, communicate clearly and in a timely manner, and be punctual for all teaching assignments and meetings.
    • Additional language proficiency other than English a plus; proficiency in Spanish and/or Haitian Creole highly desired.

    Engagement Period:

    This is a part-time, contract position with an average of up to 15 hours/month. Teaching takes place onsite at the ICA and seasonally at the ICA Watershed (East Boston). Guided Visits for K-12 groups are scheduled Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday mornings during the school year. Wednesday mornings are added during the busy spring field trip season, April-June. The teaching schedule varies week-to-week based on group demand and the Gallery Teacher’s availability. Team meetings take place monthly on Wednesday mornings. Additional meetings, both virtual and onsite, are scheduled throughout the contract period. Prep work is also required.

    Position Title: Graduate Student Lecturer – Contract Position

    Overview: During the 2025-2026 academic year, the ICA will present An Indigenous Present, a thematic exhibition spanning 100 years of contemporary Indigenous art, and Derrick Adams: View Master, the first mid-career survey of the prolific New York–based artist.

    The contract Graduate Student Lecturers are responsible for leading tours of both exhibitions, with a focus on university and adult audiences. Through guided close looking, discussion, and the sharing of contextual background information, the Graduate Student Lecturers will help groups of visitors deepen their understanding of exhibition themes and artists.

    The Graduate Student Lecturer Contractor requires onsite presence.

    Scope of Work:

    • Conduct research and attend walkthroughs with exhibition curators in preparation for leading tours.
    • Prepare written tour outlines in advance of leading tours.
    • Lead an average of 4 tours/month for the general public and private groups.
    • Attend planning and debrief meetings with Education staff.

    • Currently enrolled in a graduate program studying art history, studio art, museum education, or related field. Recent graduates will also be considered.

    • Experience and comfortability with public speaking or teaching. Experience with gallery teaching a plus.

Graduate Student Lecturers will lead an average of 4 tours/month, each approximately 1 hour in length. Additional hours for meetings and prep work will also be required. Tours will all be conducted in-person, on site at the ICA. Some meetings may be held remotely via Microsoft Teams.

    Position Title: Helpdesk Analyst

    Reports to: Director of IT Operations & Strategy

    Overview: The Helpdesk Analyst is responsible for providing front line support and response for all end-user support requests. This position is responsible for the management of the IT ticket queue, including dispatching tickets to second tier support and vendors, managing moves, addition and deletion of users, imaging and deployment of user devices; providing on-time training for end users, in addition to other IT projects and tasks. The position reports to the Director of IT Operations and Strategy and works collaboratively and autonomously. Occasional nights and weekend work may be required to support the IT infrastructure of the ICA.

    Responsibilities: 

    • Provide front line management and resolution of trouble tickets submitted by end users or tickets generated internally from the IT team including cross platform Windows and Mac – support for MS Office, file and print access, application access, presentation support etc. 
    • Maintain detailed service records in the ticketing system to document end user issues and resolution and/or escalation details. 
    • Provide onboarding and off-boarding of staff and other individuals including user IDs, mailboxes, phone profiles, SharePoint and Microsoft Teams. 
    • Provide just in time training and support for end users as needed. 
    • Manage device inventory, in addition to imaging of devices and management of end user software portfolio. 
    • Manage software updates and mass software deployments. 
    • Maintain and continually update IT documentation related to frontline support including but not limited to new employee onboarding documents, frequently asked questions and how-to instructions to facilitate ease of access and use of ICA technology. 
    • Assist with maintaining local network (switches, VLANs, cable plant, VMWare infrastructure) and wide-area communication networks and maintenance and configuration of firewall to ensure reliable and secure network access for business applications. 
    • Participate in project management of large deployments and upgrades; contribute to defining departmental direction and prioritizing long term projects. 

    Qualifications: 

    • A minimum of two years’ experience in a frontline IT support role in a multiplatform environment particularly Windows and Mac in a professional organization, ideally in a nonprofit, cultural or public facing institution. 
    • A Bachelor’s degree preferably in a technology related area, or an Associate’s degree in a technology related area plus equivalent work experience or an equivalent mix of applicable certifications and work experience. 
    • A demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and independently. 
    • Ability to communicate and present information in a clear and concise manner; excellent verbal and written communication skills  
    • Ability to problem solve through analysis of issues and use of critical thinking  
    • Ability to handle and maintain sensitive and confidential information with a high degree of professionalism and discretion. 
    • Commitment to working with a diverse constituent base 
    • Must be able to work odd hours and be on call after work hours and weekends as needed. 

    Physical Requirements: 

    • Prolonged periods of remaining stationary such as when working on a computer, and speaking on the phone 
    • Ability to listen and talk for extended periods in person, over the telephone, and computer 
    • Possess mobility to work in an office setting and use office equipment, move about throughout the museum and other ICA facilities when necessary 
    • Must be able to exchange accurate information with staff, vendors and other constituents 
    • Ability to push and pull doors, keyboarding and gripping 
    • On occasion, you may need to lift up to 30lbs and/or get on a ladder with the ability to utilize a range of motions overhead.

    Starting Compensation: $65,000.00 Annual 

    Starting compensation is based on meeting minimum qualifications. 

    Each ICA position has a job grade based on the position’s evaluated job responsibilities, required education and experience, needed skills to perform the job, and professional knowledge.   

    The position’s grade and respective compensation range is determined by the position’s overall responsibilities, including decision making, supervisory/management requirements, resource management and budgeting duties.  

    Compensation is ultimately determined by the scope of the position and responsibilities, the candidate’s relevant experience, and internal equity, with starting salaries typically falling in the lower half of the compensation range.
